Creator/Contributor:

Cummings, Edgar A.

Abstract:

Twenty letters from Leander to his cousin Edgar, relating to his experiences and observations from the various towns where he lived in Sonoma County. He discusses his work as a schoolmaster, mostly with dissatisfaction over low pay and poor conditions. Almost all of the letters contain strong anti-Chinese sentiments, with references to "pagan hordes" and "heathen temples." Leander comments on laws and rulings which favor and protect the Chinese, complains about the money they send back to China, and claims that they spread smallpox and leprosy. Other topics include local matters, such as the climate and giant redwoods in the area, and family matters. Some of the letters include related clippings.
